Sombre
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 30th, 2009
Just sat here this evening watching “Tsunami : Caught on camera” on Channel 4. I remember very well the shock of the pictures I saw when the boxing day Tsnnami hit but it’s nothing compared to the footage and commentary from the documentary this evening.
A timely reminder as I look toward next year, that pursuit of happiness and self fulfillment is a key value that you shouldn’t forget. Wealth is not measured by monetary values alone and doing things because you enjoy them is just as important as anything else.
I think there have been a couple of really key moments in my life that have shaped the way I think and my outlook. Having to cope with losing my mother at a very young age was key. That gave me the motivation to make the most of everyday. I owe it to my Mum who I outlived. The lesson, life is short, it’s natures way of encouraging a bit of focus. It also taught me to be kind to others, there really is no point in making others lives a misery. It’s not very fulfilling for the soul either!
The other moment was when I left my ‘normal’ career. Having suffered at the hands of the corporate world I knew that it was inevitable that I would leave, but I didn’t know how or when. I’d warned my wife it would come, but it was still a surprise when I did it. It turned out to be one of the biggest moments in my life. Going out and doing things because I thought they were right and I wanted to do them was such an enlightening experience. You often get these great big “I was right!” moments. The big lesson I learnt here was not to do things because you were concerned about what could go wrong. In reality things go unexpectedly right as well. No point in focusing on the negatives, it’s a waste of time.
So I am now casting my eye over 2010 and pondering what I want to achieve next year. Tonight’s documentary threw some reminders into the mix and it put day to day issues into sharp relief!
Klassy Kauto
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 26th, 2009

Great performance by Kauto Star in the big race on boxing day. He was priced to win, but not with such certainty. In the end Kauto Star completely and utterly destroyed the opposition in spectacular style. Compilers have now upped Kauto’s rating into the 190′s making him one of the greatest chasers the sport has ever seen. It’s been great to watch the progress of this gelding in the time I have been on exchanges. I think it’s a shame that there isn’t more coverage in the media about the achievement.
I didn’t actually do as well as I should have on the race itself as I had too large a position open just as the price surged out. Some odd betting on this race, an odd SP and various other titbits to examine. Such is life, I did very well elsewhere so it wasn’t a problem. It just would have been nice to bag something decent on the big race. The race itself had matched bet volume of £5.5m of which £4.5m was matched on Kauto. £73k of £100k at SP was on Kauto. You would think most would be backing but curiously the SP returned at near to 1.70!!

Today at this exact time we marked the winter solstice. It’s a day I look forward to as it is the shortest day of the year. From now on in we are counting down to Spring, not up to mid winter.
The weather looks set to continue to play havoc with the sports and with only one meeting on at Southwell tomorrow, it’s time to get festive. We had big snow fall this afternoon and it lay down some of the heaviest snow I have ever seen in the UK. It also set off some lighting, which is very rare.
The snow arrived with perfect timing. The children are at home and I made the sensible decision to work from home. As soon as I had done enough for the day, we went out and had a whale of a time in the deep snow. We also helped a few cars escape various gradients, fool on anybody trying to drive in that weather.
I think that’s me done on the trading front for now. A bit of last minute shopping maybe, more playing in the snow tomorrow, definitely!
Nothing to play for

No action this evening for me. With the Wolverhampton twilight card proving a bit of a mare and a lot of big volume Europe league matches having bearing on the outcome of the groups, it’s a really dull evening in prospect. A good excuse to get down the pub for the last quiz of the year. I can watch some of the ‘action’ on the TV there instead.
It’s been a generally positive December so far and tomorrow, snow pending, I should reach last years levels a day early. Would be nice to finishing on a flourish, but we are forecast a lot of snow so I suspect the Ascot meeting, just up the road, could be in trouble.
Don’t stress too much at this time of year, abandoned meetings come in batches and it’s difficult to compare records YOY. I had a good Saturday last weekend but last year there was very little racing that survived the weather. This year the two weekends could swap places.
Enjoy the snow if you get some.
Pressure on
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 15th, 2009
It’s that time of year when I often turn my attention to a few unusual markets. For my research into these markets I tend to visit this page: -
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/surface_pressure.html
The markets I am looking at are the ‘White Christmas’ markets. I’ve done pretty well on them in the past and fancy a go this year again as sleet is forecast this week.
Typically the YES markets work against you as time progresses, so laying the NO is the best bet. However high pressure parked over the UK often brings in cold air from the east and this will raise the chance of snow. You get advanced warning by watching snow patterns across Europe. Just think moist air hitting cold land mass = snow. If no high pressure then it would be an Atlantic low rushing in with strong winds that will blow the snow in from the north.
The definition of a white Christmas is whether a single flake drops on each respective station. So even just a flurry can result in a YES.
Cue Bing Crosby.
Gamble on Giggs
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 13th, 2009
I noticed this evening that Jenson Button had fallen away from the favourite status and there is a bit of a gamble on Ryan Giggs to be sports personality of the year. It’s worth noting that, in the past, the favourite of this competition has often not won. Also, there are some odd results thrown up on these competitions. I’m pretty suspicious of how these competitions are won in the current format. I suspect they are open to abuse.
I have other work to do at the moment but I’ll keep a watching brief on it in the background.
EDIT : Giggs wins

In the thick of battle today, pushing in orders, moving them around, getting filled on some, not on others. Ducking in and around the market, taking some risk. Phew, great total on one race, great job. Celebrate by taking five minutes out and getting a drink before sitting back down to my PC.
Race void!
Doesn’t happen very often and it’s an unfortnate circumstance that has brought it around, but trust it to happen on one of the best results of the day. It could have happen on something less important. As it is, that’s wiped out a nice chunk of my days trading. Will just have to work harder on the remaining races by the look of it!
Woods to take indefinite break
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 12th, 2009
Tiger Woods is taking an indefinite break from professional golf to tackle problems in his private life. In a statement on his website, he said he was aware of the disappointment “my infidelity” had caused to his family. “I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.”
http://web.tigerwoods.com/news/article/200912117801012/news/
Anybody who trades the golf markets will know that a market with woods in it, is really a case of will he or wont he win? With Woods missing from the field, this will significantly open up these markets and create a whole host of opportunities.
I hope its not the end of Woods, I doubt it, so hopefully we can look forward to his return at some point in the not too distant future. In the meantime its a massive chance for some of the close rivals to get a decent shot at a major.
My favourite Tiger moment and one of the best ever in golf: -
The 300k trader
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 11th, 2009
There has been a lot of discussion on the forum about a person who often appears in a number of the horse racing markets each day. Their presence in the market is getting quite common and also quite easy to spot. Today there was nothing of note, but yesterday was different.
In the 15:50 at Taunton the price had started to drift and this initiated a response. The response was a back bet of a whopping £300k, probably to try and stop the drift. You don’t see bets of that size very often! At least we now know that they have a decent sized bank at their disposal as well. Curious stuff. The order was pulled a few seconds later.

R&R

As December and winter in general are quieter months I’ve been looking to get my life back a bit and take some time out to re-charge my batteries for next year. I have a hospital appointment coming up and the results of that will determine what I do in the next couple of months, so a break now seemed a good idea, just in case.
For something completely different this week, my wife and I went on the Orient Express. Scooting around the countryside in luxury was a great way to relax. The service is excellent and the surroundings palatial, it’s worth doing these things now and again. After a long year, it was a nice treat.
During this quieter time of the year, I’ve been really busy building new knowledge. Not only in existing markets but new ones also. I think is what I enjoy the most, discovering and putting into practice new things and ideas. It seems there is never an end to the things you can discover if you are willing to dig deep enough and there is always another goal to reach. As it’s been another good year I am really looking forward to 2010. I have already earmarked new activity and just can’t wait for the calendar to come around to put it to use. Now we are in new offices that will also help the whole thing move forward again next year. I can’t wait!
Wacky Wolves
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 5th, 2009
This evening Wolverhampton provided a really interesting finish to my week. In several races the prices were all over the place and there were some huge drifters and steamers. As a result of this and a generally positive day, I managed the unusual feat of eclipsing all the other days of the week put together. Can’t complain, but it’s just very unusual.
The action started early when High Constable moved in from 3′s to 1.50 before the off. That’s a 30% move on book value which is absolutely enormous! Probably one of the biggest gambles of the year in book % terms. It was a gamble that ultimately failed though as the horse was well beaten. That lit up the evening though and was followed by a lot of action in subsequent races. I have put up a couple of the more interesting charts from this evening, a paradise for swing traders.

Channel 4 cut racing coverage
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 5th, 2009
CHANNEL 4 has revealed it is slashing at least £800,000 a year from its racing budget and using the cuts to carry out “a vigorous makeover” of its coverage.

But the stats said?
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 4th, 2009
The recent Man City vs Arsenal match was a good match to appraise theory with reality. It’s always worth having and using stats to see what is likely to happen on average. But if you are in-play there is not point in thinking the odds will fit a perfect curve if the TV is telling you something else. A weakened Arsenal side really didn’t bring the game to City right from the off and this was reflected in the odds quite quickly. You would expect the odds on Man City to start drifting almost from the the off but in fact you can see that didn’t happen. It threw up quite a few opportunities but its also a great illustration of why reading a sport inplay is a useful skill.

November
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 3rd, 2009
Despite my pessimism in October, November went a lot better than expected and I ended up a whopping 44% year on year. Not all roses though. As we slip into the harder period of the year I did suffer on individual days and my strike rate fell away. I made too many mistakes by being over aggressive at times when it just didn’t make sense. Hopefully I’ve learnt my lesson on this.
I owe most of my success last month to work I did much earlier in the year. While it can be difficult to take time out from your day to day activities, it’s often very worthwhile doing so as it can lead you in new directions or allow you to see how things have changed. You can also try some new ideas and that’s what led me to a good result, new ideas.
Messing around and experimenting is easier if you are not worried about losing money. Therefore, I have a spare account that I use to trade now and again and I work up a slush fund in this account. This slush fund is money that I can afford to lose without feeling any emotion. I just pretend the money never existed in the first place! Then, when I have a bright idea, or a not so bright idea, I just give it a hack and see what happens. Nine times out of ten it’s a blind alley but often you will come across something that changes the way you think, or allows you to put something new into use.
The markets are always subtly shifting and for every move you make it’s likely somebody will make a counter move. So it’s always worth investing some time into either improving your existing activity or trying out new areas.
Massive gamble landed
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 2nd, 2009
Wow, not the biggest of the year but a huge steamer in the grade 7 opener at Kempton this evening. Opening in the 20′s the price completely plunged in all the way to 3.35 before bouncing out again to go off at 4.20. I was watching TV with the kids so I missed most of this, but still managed to get a decent profit out of it. There was lots of money matched at big prices some a fair few people would have had some big greens on this race I suspect. Hope you managed to catch some of this massive move. By the way, the horse won easily!!!!

Four year hoodoo ended!
Posted by Peter Webb in Bet Angel on December 2nd, 2009
Ever since I watched Southampton relegated from the premiership four years ago, my presence at a football ground seems to condemn the home team. I don’t get the chance to see many matches nowadays, but every match I turn up to since then, ends with the home team unable to win. Regardless of the quality of the teams, whether its the champions league or a more minor game, I have been unable to watch a home team win. Finally I have laid that to rest.
Last night, I nipped down to the south coast to watch Southampton take on Wycombe in a not particularly inspiring league two clash. I offered 1.50 for a Southampton win and, unlike the last match against Brighton, there was little going for the away team. It looked a fairly certain home win.
And so that turned out to be. Southampton won and climbed out of the relegation zone. They made fairly heavy weather of it though. Despite dominating the chances, Wycombe only had one shot worth recalling, Southampton only managed the one goal and really should scored quite a few more; but a win is a win.
One point of interest. I think it’s always interesting to watch sports live as you control the action of the ‘camera’ and can spot a lot more than watching on the TV. It’s a nice reminder of what you can miss when a director is controlling the camera. It’s worth getting out there now and again and looking at the broader picture. It’s given me a few ideas to pursue in the new year.
