Aussie open – open!
Posted by Peter Webb in Tennis on January 15th, 2012
Just about to head off to bed, but in half an hour the Australian open tennis will kick into gear. It’s a great opportunity to get stuck into the Tennis, even if you are not into Tennis, as a lot of matches will appear in the UK early in the morning when not much else is going on.
I have set up Bet Angel to do some simple automation in the early rounds of the tournament as I know where the most volatile matches are likely to be. Bet Angel will be out on watch for me tonight to trade these matches if they reach a critical point. I’ll wake up tomorrow morning to see how it’s got on.
I’m looking forward to the first grand slam of 2012, let’s hope it’s a vintage year.

Looking forward to getting stuck into the Tennis this morning. I’ve had a delayed start to the Open as I was unable to do anything on the first day due to other commitments. Plenty of opportunity abounds in the tournament. The good thing about this grand slam is that you can trade it first thing in the morning, leaving the rest of the day for other sports.
It was this time last year that I used the Aussie Open for final testing on Tennis Trader. It was an important time, because it was the first time that we used decent sums of money to put our money where our mouth was.
This was important, as the only time I feel comfortable trading is if I know roughly where the odds are going to go. Using that methodology you can ‘frame’ your up and downside risk and take more risk overall. This will lead to more confidence and better results. I admit that I find it difficult to actively participate in a market where I am not confident of knowing the market like this, so Tennis trader was an important step achieving the things I need to in these markets.
If you haven’t participated in Tennis before the Aussie open is a good chance to do so without interfering with other markets. So dust off your mouses and give it a try.
Best trading match of the tournament?

It’s not often you get such close matches so early on in a tournament, but massive credit to James Blake for almost pulling off a big shock today. It could be one of the best trading matches of the tournament; I think it will difficult to beat. In the last set you could have laid Del Petro at 1.06 only to see him reach break 2′s just minutes later. Fantastic stuff, great trading fodder and very entertaining too. Del Potro is currently on course to meet Murray in a later round.
Del Potro won, eventually, 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 5-7 6-3 10-8.

Tennis trading advice

I was asked to write a primer on trading tennis markets last month. You can view the full article in this months ‘Gambling on line’ magazine. Unfortunately I can’t publish this article here just yet, but I thought I would point it out for you so you can read up in time for some action on the Australian open tennis in Melbourne. I have talked about Tennis trading quite a lot on this blog as well, so be sure to do a search and read up on some of my previous posts.
Early rounds of these sorts of tournaments are often dominated by very short priced favourites. If you want to do some speculative work in the markets it can often throw up some easy profits. When Nadal got of to a rusty start today he drifted from 1.02 to a slightly panic driven 1.09. At 1.02 you can lay of a lot of liability for little risk so this was an excellent opportunity.
However, the main thing that caught my eye today was Fabrice Santoro. Santoro has become the first ever player to successfully compete in grand slam tournaments over four decades! Full story on this link, a remarkable acheivement.

Early bird doesn’t catch the worm!

Hmmm, bit hacked off this morning. Up very early to look at the Aussie group racing. Did a nice trade at Caulfield only to see my profit wiped out in a manner I hadn’t seen in the UK.
As the race started two horses reared and one chucked it’s jockey in the stalls. In the UK that would have just been tough luck, but the stewards in Aus called one or both non runners, not quite sure what they have done at the moment. This obliterated my trade and I went from a nice profit to nothing. So all this rhetoric about the early bird, well no juicy worms about this morning! In fact I feel like at cat just snuck out and bit my head off! Such is life.
Off to play Tennis at 07:45 so hope I have a good game and return to UK racing in a better mood.
Classic battle underway in Melbourne

With the weather messing around with the horse racing again its great to see a real battle under way in the Aussie open Tennis. The two Spaniards just don’t want to give up on this one and it’s gone to a fifth set. With such a close match you will get massive swings in the final set, often for little risk so it’s worth keeping an eye on progress in between the fits and starts of the racing.
