Marmite Monday

It’s that day of the year that you either love or hate. The August bank holiday in the UK bringsĀ a whole bunch of racing, all on the same day.
In total there will be ten cards todays and about a billion races. This may seem like heaven for some, but it’s a nightmare for others. Quite a few races will attract little liquidity, a lot isn’t of great quality and many races will clash meaning that you can’t do much on them. The day usually does through up the odd opportunity though.
As the evening comes into play we now also have the US Open tennis. I guess you should expect some weather disruption though.
Whether you choose to enjoy the sun or the racing, good luck whatever your choice!
Racing needs to wake up

Sunny public holiday, lots of people on extended holidays, spirits are high. But racing is struggling to muster up decent fare again.
Today we have a bumper bank holiday card with 8 meetings and 55 races on hand, excluding the Irish racing. But a casual glance down the UK card shows only Warwick with decent fields and out of the remaining 7 UK meetings only 4 races have ten runners or more. Hmmm….
No racing on Good Friday and only one evening meeting on last Monday. Any guesses why racing is losing out to other sports? Racing has never been amazing on a bank holiday but last year we averaged over 9 runners per race. This year we scrape just over 7 and if you remove Warwick this falls to just over 6, that’s quite a decline. Horses will get prize money today just for turning up, that can’t be any good. Surely it would make sense to do less quantity and more quality?
Manic monday

Seven race cards with generally average fodder on display, good luck if you are having a go. My advise if you are, is to try and pick up on clear opportunities. With so many races on clashing it is inevitable that some markets will be rubbish, but hopefully some will get just inside the required sweet spot. With so many on, just ignore the rubbish ones and try and catch some quality opportunities. Good luck!
[EDIT] – Just been checking my notes from last year and I found a race at Leicester where five horse got to the start but never raced. That has to be some sort of a record?
Mixed up Monday

Ah, it’s that time of the year again when you are faced with the inpenetrable bank holiday markets. About a billion low quality races all going off at the same time! Often there is so much clashing and problems that next to nothing can be easily traded and if you can, you may not actually see the start itself. A risk in itself.
This particular Monday has never been a favourite of mine and two years ago I pulled in my second worst result ever on this day. As a consequence don’t feel you are missing much by skipping today!
Still without full use of my hand I have little option but to be home today, so I may have a go at some very carefully selected races, but I doubt I’ll all guns blazing today. The busy summer is almost on us, have a rest and enjoy some time off.
