Guineas

I had a fantastic result on the Guineas last year, when just about everything fell into place nicely. This year already looks a bit tougher so I can’t assure myself of a similar result, but will try my best to make something happen. The much vaunted ‘Frankel’ is currently trading at 1.59 which should generate a lot of volume today, but whether it does much else is another question! I’ll be reviewing the Guineas trade, amongst others, in my next course.

I’ve had a couple of really good moral boosting days this week so I am in good spirits and will enter today with some enthusiasm. As I have stated before I am working in some new, complimentary, areas recently and most have some promise. Some are definitely in the unknown category at the moment, but you don’t make progress by standing still, do you?

Jockey title opportunties

Another close Jockey championship draws to a close this weekend and it’s going to the wire by the look of it.

The battle is throwing up some interesting trading opporunties as people start to discount the prospect of a jockey change bringing a change of fortune for individual horses. Certainly there is a big incentive to win races that may have been over looked earlier in the season. Keep your eyes open for racing with either of the these two riders in them, as they may present decent trading opportunties. There have been many already this week.

The aching transition

It’s that time of year in horse racing where the flat gives way to the jumps.

Some good flat races left, but a lot of lower quality and end of season stuff too. On the other side, the jumps now also have a number of novice races. So you end up with some really thin betting markets around at this time of year and things get tougher. However, it’s not new it’s been the same for years, it just a seasonal shift.

When I first ran into this period quite a few years ago, I thought I had lost it. It can be difficult to cope with, but if you are struggling during this time it’s nothing to worry about; it’s just the normal transition from one market type to another. This is usually the last big month I get before we descend into the winter malaise. So I’m going to do my best to put in a good month and start collecting some firewood to keep me warm over the winter!

Get used to it

Start of season, end of season

As you are probably aware from my posts, there is nothing more I like that a football match with a strong incentive behind it. At the start of a season, form is difficult to spot early on. Though promotion and relegation isnt’ so tricky. But it’s the end of the season when things really begin to happen. With many matches classed as ‘six pointers’ for one reason or another, this time of year has always been a fertile hunting ground. Wear your hunting hat now and you will benefit significantly.

In horse racing we are in the early flat turf season. This also presents opportunity, as there is often a lack of form. This lack of form means that people are looking for any clues as to how a horse will perform. If money is coming for or against a horse with little form, there is often a tendency to follow that money and re-inforce any trend. This tends to make the early turf season races, especially maidens, very ‘swingy’. Trends can be persistent and extensive at this time of year. The early part of yesterday was a spectacularly swingy day.

Keeping an eye open for either opportunities can be very rewarding.
