So you think

Despite the long weekend I couldn’t help but be tempted to dip in to the Curragh yesterday to take a look at ‘So You Think‘. I’ve seen this horse progress in Australia so my ears pricked up when I heard it was running in Ireland yesterday. It didn’t disappoint and despite it’s short price I managed to get a decent position on it, netting just short of £127. This could be a good summer for the flat season after Frankel hosed up in the 1000 Guineas.

I didn’t beat my total of last year on the Guineas, as predicted, but did OK on the weekend. The only thing that was very noticeable was the lack of money. Both feature races at Newmarket were well down on previous years on Betfair, 20% or so and when a group 3 race only attracts just over £500k you know things are running half empty. No real explanation on why volumes were so weak this weekend but if you have any, feel free to express them in the forum as I’m surprised to see such, relatively speaking, weak markets. Let’s hope its a bit more buoyant this week.

Guineas

I had a fantastic result on the Guineas last year, when just about everything fell into place nicely. This year already looks a bit tougher so I can’t assure myself of a similar result, but will try my best to make something happen. The much vaunted ‘Frankel’ is currently trading at 1.59 which should generate a lot of volume today, but whether it does much else is another question! I’ll be reviewing the Guineas trade, amongst others, in my next course.

I’ve had a couple of really good moral boosting days this week so I am in good spirits and will enter today with some enthusiasm. As I have stated before I am working in some new, complimentary, areas recently and most have some promise. Some are definitely in the unknown category at the moment, but you don’t make progress by standing still, do you?

1000 Guineas

Rather bizarrely I managed to get just over 1000 Guineas in profit on the 2000 Guineas. Does this mean I will get 2000 on the 1000? I doubt it, but it was an excellent day. I just happened to have one of those days where everything just seemed to slot into place. I managed a clean sweep on all 44 races I traded today. It’s so nice to do that, but I think you have to be realistic and accept that a day like that is rare. I had a stinker yesterday, so it was a pleasant surprise because I had set my expectations to a much lower level for today. Tomorrow I will have go at the fillies race and see what I can get from that, I am not expecting a repeat performance!

I am currently looking at the Kentucky Derby. I’ve never traded this successfully in the past and I am currently debating whether I try tonight. I’ve have a rule that even if I think it won’t work out, I should try anyhow. It’s another chance to learn and try to get it right for the future. Good luck if you are having a go, I have a friend at the track and he tells me the weather is horrible!
