The national – Part three

And so ends the national series for this year, a decent result on the The Grand national, the Scottish national and the Irish national. Outside of the Irish national there was little of interest for me today, I didn’t like the card and I was proved right, it was a mess. I really should stop doing days that I know I wont enjoy, it makes little material difference to me and to enjoy a day out on a boat or something is probably of more value. Still, I managed to go for a run today and also pick up some new fish for the pond and I derived more pleasure from either than some of the racing today.

Looks like this month is going well, so it’s now time to start looking at the Guineas meeting.

Online betting tax imposed

Stark headline for a lot in this sector, but in the latest austerity budget in Ireland there were proposals to level out the playing field by introducing a new tax on phone and Internet gambling. As always, details are a bit sketchy at the moment but shops have been taxed for sometime but other channels not, so this is addressing that discrepancy.

Quite how it will work and be enforced is difficult to see at the moment, but it will be an interesting move to watch. It’s really difficult to now how it will affect exchange users, but the Irish government have confirmed the application of this to exchange users will be different to other forms of gambling. Let’s watch how it unfolds.

Existing Irish bookmakers were very guarded in their response.

Laying on the sand

Today sees the annual return of the races on the beach at Laytown. When my work on the markets is complete I will definately visit this race course along with many others that I have on the list. I keep saying that ‘next year’ I will do Laytown, so I look forward to saying the same next year! In the meantime I’ll be looking to do a bit of laying at laytown.
