Satisfying chaos

OK, yesterday didn’t seem that chaotic in the end, just a bit frustrating. I had to wait ages to find races that really set themselves up nicely, but eventually I did and they were OK. But it was a little dull overall.

Kauto Star lit up the day when I took a few races off to watch the King George VI produce a bit of history. What a great horse we have been treated to and it looks like we could be seeing an interesting Cheltenham gold cup now as well. Lets hope we get a big field and a competitive race.

Not my best result of the day, but a decent result came out of this market on Betdaq. I’ve been doing more work on Betdaq recently and will publish more information on the blog. Market conditions are improving all the time and I recommend using both exchanges where possible and for your own benefit and needs but also to increase competitiveness in the exchange market. If we have people fighting over our business maybe we can get a fairer deal. But obviously for me every £100 on Betdaq is worth the equivalent of £250 on Betfair, so it’s really worth me pushing hard for a result and sacrificing time on Betfair. As my activity is net accretive to the exchange I am also creating opportunities for others. As I get better at managing my risk I am probably creating some value for others. Today I had to exit a position that I made a mess off, I was still in profit but wanted to dump it and start again. I offered it many ticks higher on Betdaq than the best available price on Betfair. Any body active on both would have seen this and could get value from it or arbed it. The opportunity is there if you look, quite a few hundred quid as well!

This week looks pretty reasonble with the holiday cards increasing the scope and capacity of the racing. I reckon it should be a good week.

Kauto can’t

Last week I asked if Kauto can, but it seems he can’t. With no racing of note on today I thought I’d review this race for you.

The 11 year old isn’t the same horse as previous years, no surprise there. But it was disappointing to not have another historic moment in racing. There haven’t been many over the last year and it’s nice to hang a news story on these things. I think racing has missed out as a result. Too often good horses are retired to stud too quickly IMHO, no chance here of course!

As predicted the price on Kauto came in during the morning and I was sitting pretty but a blip out evaporated a lot of that. I waded in again when the price moved in, confirming what I had suspected, but I was really caught out by the erratic moments before the off. I ended up closing out for what felt a disappointing total on such a big race.

I can’t really explain why the market destabilised like that and it is unusual. Ultimately I was just a bit slow spotting it or else I would have done much better. I did pretty well on other races and overall Saturday was a good day. This was pleasing being the first day that cross matching was switched on. Any change will always leave you in some doubt on the impact so it was reassuring to put in a decent day. When the race was underway I laid Kauto for the Gold Cup and have now traded out so I already have a profit on the ante post market. Just looking forward to March now!

Can Kauto?

Easy to spot the key interest today on the horse racing front when Kauto Star will try to make history at Kempton park. Such is the interest in this and the sentiment I suspect his price will shorten through the day so for once I am on early on this. It should be an interesting market and an interesting race, so I hope it turns out that way.

Klassy Kauto

Great performance by Kauto Star in the big race on boxing day. He was priced to win, but not with such certainty. In the end Kauto Star completely and utterly destroyed the opposition in spectacular style. Compilers have now upped Kauto’s rating into the 190′s making him one of the greatest chasers the sport has ever seen. It’s been great to watch the progress of this gelding in the time I have been on exchanges. I think it’s a shame that there isn’t more coverage in the media about the achievement.

I didn’t actually do as well as I should have on the race itself as I had too large a position open just as the price surged out. Some odd betting on this race, an odd SP and various other titbits to examine. Such is life, I did very well elsewhere so it wasn’t a problem. It just would have been nice to bag something decent on the big race. The race itself had matched bet volume of £5.5m of which £4.5m was matched on Kauto. £73k of £100k at SP was on Kauto. You would think most would be backing but curiously the SP returned at near to 1.70!!

So close for Kauto

Well, what a race that was. I really though Kauto Star had lost it, but it was always going to be a bob of the head that got it ultimately. The market got the photo finish wrong for once, but I must admit I also thought Kauto Star had lost it.

Benefit of form and horse related knowledge made this a good trade opportunity today. This morning I phoned around a couple of horse racing types and talked to them about the race. One thing came across and that was that Kauto liked soft ground and it seemed to be a race well set up for the horse. You can see the market thought so also.

I managed to equal my total on the race from last year, on what turned out to be a good day. But I should have done better to be honest. With plenty in the bank I kept trying to catch a bounce out, but it never happened. I wasted a lot of money doing that. Sometimes it works very well and it was worth a go. Made more on other races, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

In reaction to this race I laid Kauto Star for the King George VI. Will hold the position for a little while, but it looks like I have made a mistake there as well. I don’t trade Ante Post much unless I have a good reason to do so, so I am not well practiced but it seemed an opportunity. Denman runs next week so I guess that will define how the Gold Cup ante post looks between these two.
