The long day…………..

Today we have an interesting session. UK racing trundles on from afternoon to evening racing, then the Breeders Cup meeting comes on line in the US. As the Breeders cup meeting on the Friday draws to a close, we then morph to Australian racing and the final day at the Melbourne cup meeting. The remarkable Black Caviar runs again tomorrow and is a incredible 1.06 to win it’s group one race. I think that’s untradeable, but I am tempted to watch the race and hype surrounding this horse.
In previous years I’ve had mixed results in the Breeders cup meeting so I’m not sure if I will hang on till late into the night to give it a go. The Saturday is the better day so that should be your focus but you may be able to squeak something out of the Friday as well. Anyhow, if you choose to all available it will be a looooong day. But hopefully a very rewarding one!

Me and the Melbourne cup go back a few years now. Many moons ago I got interested in the ‘race that stops a nation’ and learned that it really did stop the nation, they have a national holiday today.
So, intrigued, I got up at 4am one dark winter Tuesday to see what all the fuss was about. Nothing really happened apart from a lack of sleep and I returned to bed disappointed. Back then I had converted have the garage in my old house into an office that I could work from. So I slept on the floor that night so I wouldn’t disturb the rest of the family. The following year I tried again and did a bit better, but not much. My wife thought I was mad getting up at 4am to watch a bit of racing.
From year three however things started to move in the right direction and I built year on year on my knowledge and understanding. So this year I am looking forward to giving it another go. I have taken up the kind offer of a Bet Angel user to shift time zones to give myself the chance to participate in a more reasonable frame of mind and in more comfortable surroundings than a garage floor.

Melbourne cup carnival is here

The race that stops a nation isn’t too far away now, but the action really kicks of in Flemington today / tomorrow, depending on where you are in the world.
We have a number of very high profile, rich prize money racing in Melbourne this Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday and next Saturday. It should prove to be a real feast of high quality racing.
From a European perspective there is the issue that most of this takes place in the dead of night. However, if you want to look at and learn from this why not do some automated stuff overnight? Whether it is just to collect data or test an actual theory there is plenty of scope to get Bet Angel to do things that you can’t.
I’m really looking forward to the carnival this year. About six years ago, I think, I tried to do something on it and failed but have got better over the years at pulling something out from this meeting. Good luck if you want to give it a try.

Bart Cummings trained ‘So you think’ steps up in the early hours of the morning UK time to see if the legendary trainer can bag his 13th winner of the Melbourne Cup. There is $6m up for grabs in this year’s race spread across the field. Given the form that the favourite is in, this should be a very interesting race and betting heat. The price ‘So you think’ has come in a fair bit already and ‘Shocking’, last years winner, is on the drift. I’m already up on the race 13 hours before it starts thanks to these moves.
With the Melbourne cup this week and the Breeders Cup at the weekend, this is the last really good chance of the year for a strong week. So I will be taking all the opportunties I can to finish the year with a bang!
Derby day

Isn’t the Derby in June? Yes and no, if you are in Australia, early tomorrow morning (UK Time) is Derby Day in Victoria. This kicks off the Melbourne Cup carnival and a week of top class Australian action. On Tuesday we have the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup.
As I have leant more and more about this carnival of racing, the more I realise it’s significance and I’m actually quite excited about it this year. I don’t know if I have the energy to trade it, but an early rise may be in order given the right market conditions and enough desire to overcome my need to sleep! Shocking

Good volume on the Caulfield cup in Melbourne this morning, £1.25m was traded on this high profile race and it produced some nice moves. The favourite, shocking, was defeated on heavy ground by Descarado trained by the colourful Gai Waterhouse. I had no idea she was Scottish!!
Shocking is also in key contention for the Melbourne cup, maybe the ground will be more suitable there. It’s been a good session this morning and ideal practice for the Melbourne Cup.

Well that went well! I hadn’t expected anything given my failure in previous years to get a decent sum from this race. So it was a pleasant surprise to do well on this race, just a shame you only see this sort of liquidity on one Australian race a year. Even then, just about everything went right this morning. So I definitely feel lucky to have got such a flattering result.
Congratulations to those that joined me in the early hours and also profited on the race. I think it was a success for the betting community as well. £2.7m was matched on Betfair, well above the previous year, but that is nothing compared to the $76m that was put into the Australian pools in Victoria when I last checked. Nationwide, I am informed, this total would have been nearer $200m!
No fairytale win for “Alcopop” but congrats to ‘Shocking’ who edged out the field. Looks like I will be back next year.

It’s the race that stops the nation tonight in Australia and already, 8 hours before the race is underway, £750k has been matched on the market. I’ve already put through a few trades and hope more will follow before the start of the race at 4am.

Late nights – Not just for Halloween

I’ll be up late this weekend, but not just for the odd party here and there. This weekend sees the start of the Melbourne Cup carnival. I’ve never got this right in prior years so I am trying my best to do a decent job this year.
The races at Flemington park start this Saturday at midnight GMT and the big race, the race that stops a nation, is on Tuesday at 4am. If your mad like me, you will be giving it a go. Prize money of $5.5m should ensure some liquidity. I’ll let you know how I get on.
