I’ve had quite a good week on the footy without really trying. That’s nice!
I am experimenting with some new pre-off stuff this week as well. Mixed results so far, but it does seem to be working, just not on the scale I need.
This evening there are loads of matches and as you may know I quite like the double bite of the cherry that is the Europa league. My attention is draw to the highest volume match of the evening. Spurs haven’t been convincing for me in Europe this year and Rubin Kazen will be looking for a result. This looks interesting to me.
Overall I reckon there will be around 66 goals this evening. Most to least: -
Az Alkmaar vs. Austria Vienna
Ath Bilbao vs. Red Bull Salzburg
Sp Lisbon vs. FC Vaslui
PAOK vs. Shamrock Rovers
Lokomotiv vs. AEK
FC Zurich vs. Lazio
Sturm Graz vs. Anderlecht
AEK Larnaca vs. Schalke
Stoke vs. Maccabi Tel Aviv
OB vs. Twente
Dinamo Kiev vs. Besiktas
Hapoel Tel Aviv vs. PSV
Hannover vs. FC Copenhagen
Malmo FF vs. Metalist
Slovan Bratislava vs. Paris St-G
Tottenham vs. Rubin Kazan
Club Brugge vs. Birmingham
Standard vs. Vorskla
Udinese vs. Atl Madrid
Rennes vs. Celtic
NK Maribor vs. Braga
Maccabi Haifa vs. Steaua Bucharest
Rapid Bucharest vs. Legia Warsaw
Wisla Krakow vs. Fulham

Should be an interesting evening of action tonight. Man City should beat Villareal and Man Utd should beat Otgoeoifosadufnoid or whatever they are called. Both teams have no wins so far in this stage of the campaign. Some of the ‘feature’ matches are quite uncompetitive which is disappointing but there is still a lot to play for in individual ties. Some teams will fancy a potential giant killing.
I won’t be trading this evening as I will out watching some football tonight. I’ve splashed some cash to go for some hospitality this evening for a decent night out. I’ll be keeping an eye on things via my iPhone and a VPS.
Most to least goals this evening: -
Real Madrid vs. Lyon
Otelul Galati vs. Man Utd
Man City vs. Villarreal
FC Basel vs. Benfica
Dinamo Zagreb vs. Ajax
Napoli vs. B Munich
Lille vs. Inter
CSKA Moscow vs. Trabzonspor

How pleasurable that we pretty much nailed the matches last night. 23 goals forecast and 23 scored. We also had the “right sort of slope” to the forecast with, generally, the higher scoring matches at the top of the curve and lower scoring ones to the right. It was a night set of results and some great matches last night.
This evening looks similar in terms of the goal tally and here are the rankings from most to least goals: -
BATE Borisov vs. Barcelona
Leverkusen vs. Genk
AC Milan vs. Plzen
Arsenal vs. Olympiakos
Shakhtar vs. APOEL
Valencia vs. Chelsea
Zenit St Petersburg vs. Porto
Marseille vs. Dortmund
A point of note on the matches tonight is that Leverkusen are in a better position to win at 1.34 than than AC Milan at 1.31. This appears to be the stand out anomaly in this evenings matches.

Don’t forget to use Soccer Mystic to have a good look at each match yourself!
In hindsight I’ve been too optimistic this week in the champions league. What I have learnt so far is that some teams have not settled into European competition yet and others have been a bit cautious; this is surprising in the group stages. Biggest surprise was to see Inter lose last night!
I like the Europa league as you get two bites at the cherry on a Thursday. First you get the 18:00 kick offs, then the 20:00 and tonight there are 24 matches to feast on. I’d estimate around 65 goals this evening.
Teams at the top of the expected goals list: -
Az Alkmaar vs. Malmo FF
PSV vs. Legia Warsaw
Hannover vs. Standard
Club Brugge vs. NK Maribor
Teams at the bottom of my goals list: -
PAOK vs. Tottenham
Sturm Graz vs. Lokomotiv
Dinamo Kiev vs. Stoke
Birmingham vs. Braga
I’ll talk more tomorrow about what these lists mean and how they are NOT tips.

Nice result on the Barcelona match last night! Our top four goal ranks produced three over 2.5 goal matches and the bottom four three under 2.5 goal matches. I would have estimated four matches would be likely to reach >2.5 but there were only three. I would lean on the side of lots more goals than normal this evening and therefore overs are in-play and unders at risk this evening.
Because this evening’s matches should produce more goals I would raise my forecast to around 23/24. We were a bit light on goals last night.
I’d rank most to least goals as: -
Dinamo Zagreb vs. Real Madrid
Man City vs. Napoli
Inter vs. Trabzonspor
Villarreal vs. B Munich
Ajax vs. Lyon
Benfica vs. Man Utd
FC Basel vs. Otelul Galati
Lille vs. CSKA Moscow
Both Manchunian matches deserve a bit of attention this evening and if either team carry their form forward from the premier league then their opponents will be in trouble. I suspect Man Utd will just be looking at progression at this point and will be less likely to really go for it so early on in the group stages. With confidence flowing I think Man Utd are a good price at 1.93 this morning despite a likely cautious approach. The less competitive matches look much less interesting.

An interesting bunch of matches tonight and I reckon they will throw up, on average, around 21/22 goals as a group. Don’t forget to fire up Soccer Mystic for a good look at these matches.
I’d rank most to least goals as: -
Barcelona vs. AC Milan
Porto vs. Shakhtar
Genk vs. Valencia
Chelsea vs. Leverkusen
Dortmund vs. Arsenal
Plzen vs. BATE Borisov
APOEL vs. Zenit St Petersburg
Olympiakos vs. Marseille
I’m intrigued by the Barcelona and Dortmund match. Are Barca really value at 1.28, or you could say are AC Milan really as poor as 6′s? Can Arsenal really produce something at Dortmund given the way they have played so far this season?
Unfortunately I am out at a meeting this evening and will have to skip tonight, which is a shame, but I will back behind my desk tomorrow.
For the Barca match the market is forecasting 3.30 goals. When I looked at my database of matches, the last 211 matches that matched the profile of this match produced 3.20 goals on average. 159 home teams won, producing ‘historical’ odds of 1.33 hinting at some slight lay value.
Here are the away wins that occured at these odds: -
Away – 2007 – AC Milan vs Empoli – Result – 0-1
Away – 2007 – Galatasaray vs Helsingborgs – Result – 2-3
Away – 2007 – Ajax vs Breda – Result – 1-3
Away – 2008 – Celtic vs Aberdeen – Result – 0-1
Away – 2008 – W Bremen vs Duisburg – Result – 1-2
Away – 2008 – Porto vs Leixoes – Result – 2-3
Away – 2009 – B Munich vs FC Koln – Result – 1-2
Away – 2009 – Barcelona vs Espanyol – Result – 1-2
Away – 2009 – Az Alkmaar vs Vitesse – Result – 1-2
Away – 2009 – AC Milan vs FC Zurich – Result – 0-1
Away – 2009 – Fenerbahce vs Kasimpasa – Result – 1-3
Away – 2009 – Standard vs Roeselare – Result – 0-1
Away – 2010 – Man Utd vs Leeds – Result – 0-1
Away – 2010 – Anderlecht vs Sint Truiden – Result – 1-2
Away – 2010 – Galatasaray vs Antalyaspor – Result – 1-2
Away – 2010 – Tottenham vs Wigan – Result – 0-1
Good luck whatever you are up to tonight. I’ll have a spreadsheet running with some likely payoff strategies in absence of my presence tonight. I’ll check in on the VPS at half time.

Twelve matches and I reckon there should be around 33/34 goals. It’s tougher at this stage of the tournament as incentives to score can vary and so can the strength of teams put out. So I tend to be less confident at this stage of the tournament. The knockout phase usually brings out better motivation in players.
The three matches I’d be most likely to lean on over 2.5 goals are Stuttgart, Lille and Anderlecht.
The three matches I’d be most likely to lean on under 2.5 goals are, AEK, Debrechen and Levski Sofia.
The stand out match is Juventus vs Man City and it looks like it could go either way but be quite tight. That is my main interest this evening.

Just put these on the forum.
It looks like the football will be one of few sports going ahead today, so I may as well make the most of it. We have been very close consistently on the goals tally but this evening poses a few problems given the increased importance of some of the matches. Early goals will most likely produce more goals than forecast due to the incentive to score.

An excellent result from last night when we chose to oppose Chelsea to start and got the goal forecast spot on!
I would forecast 22/23 goals this evening. I am paying a lot of attention to the Tottenham match this evening. Spurs have a big incentive to win and market seems to be pricing that in. But my contrary side is nudging me towards Spurs making hard work of it, so I am going to try and find an opportunity in there somewhere. Rangers need a result against Man Utd but I think that may open the door for United.
Tonights ratings from most to least goals.
Tottenham vs W Bremen
Valencia vs Bursaspor
Panathinaikos vs Barcelona
Inter vs Twente
Hapoel Tel Aviv vs Benfica
Rangers vs Man Utd
Schalke vs Lyon
Rubin Kazan vs FC Copenhagen

From most to least goals: -
Chelsea vs. Zilina
FC Basel vs. CFR Cluj
Ajax vs. Real Madrid
Roma vs. B Munich
Braga vs. Arsenal
Partizan Belgrade vs. Shakhtar
Auxerre vs. AC Milan
I will forecast around 20 goals this evening. Final matches in the group stages can be tricky as managers often send out weaker teams. Chelsea should beat Zilina but may be a little short at 1.17 to win, intially. It all depends what team they put out.

This evenings matches are much tighter and difficult to read. Shakhtar / Arsenal for example, if Arsenal were at home much easier. Most matches look pretty even to be honest, apart from the obvious win for Chelsea. For tonight I would forecast 21/22 goals in total.
If you look back through the blog at recent ratings, you will see we have been very close a lot of time and generally nail the lowest scoring match. The more matches there are on, the closer I will be as they even each other out. Over the course of a season I should be almost spot on, on average.
Ordered from most to least goals.
Chelsea v Spartak Moscow
FC Basel v Roma
AC Milan v Real Madrid
CFR Cluj v B Munich
Shakhtar v Arsenal
Auxerre v Ajax

Great night of Champions league football last night and an evening that pretty much went as expected. We came out with 20 goals versus the 23 I forecast.
The Europa league is much more open and I reckon there could be as many as 62 goals this evening. With the Europa league spilt across two start times this presents quite a few opportunities and I am sure a few quality positions will occur this evening. I expect there to be a higher than average number of goals this evening given the set up of the matches. Exact goal forecasts are available on the forum.

I’ve often posted up ratings so thought I would explain something about them. My ratings come for many years of research and are designed to shape the way I will participate in a match. People who have attended talks I have done about football, would probably get most value from them to be honest. Over time I’ve managed to get ratings accurate to a fraction of a percent over the course of a season. But it’s important to understand that, on a day to day basis, ratings can’t nail what happens in each individual match. But in aggregate and over all, they are effective tools.
Last night the ratings came up with the following average goals per match: -
Ajax – 2.72
Auxerre – 2.58
Braga – 2.38
Chelsea – 2.91
FC Basel – 2.85
Partizan Belgrade – 2.73
Roma – 2.88
If you add up all the ‘expected’ goals they come to 19, last night delivered 18 goals. Overall result was pretty close, but this isn’t typical as it tends to take time for the ratings to average out. Ratings can also provide a most likely, least likely scenario for several aspects of the match and this works well if you are taking a position on all matches. You win some, you lose some but overall you can end up on the deal.
I’ve posted tonight’s ratings on the forum.
