I think the issue most exchange users have is they have achieved it by not pushing the unique proposition that is the exchange, but by diverting business from the exchange and charging people more on the sportsbook. I mean, this is exactly the world we left behind us but we appear destined to sink back to that level. That's depressing, not just for us but for the gambling world in general.

I guess the only way the exchange will become dominant again is if a competitor steps in to shake things up.

"unusually high gross win margins", what does this mean?

All sportsbook talk.

Basically they have become really good at getting recreational punters and getting them to play bingo etc.

Sportsbook has had favourable results.

My biggest edge has been understanding who the market is. It offers so many opportunities.

Betfair shares have rocketed 15% after their results this morning -

The sportsbook is here to stay it seems. It's odd how people are willing to punt stupidly but not take the care and effort to get value. I guess that's the market?

Notes

New customers are primarily joining through our Sportsbook, which is the most efficient source of activations. These customers are then subsequently introduced to our other products. This has resulted in a positive impact across the rest of Betfair's business, with increases of 20% and 74% respectively in the number of first-time Exchange and Gaming users.

The Exchange remains our key differentiator and total trading volume increased to £55.3bn (FY14: £52.8bn)

Our Sportsbook has continued to perform strongly for what is still a comparatively new product in a competitive market. Volumes were up 140% during the year to £1.2bn (FY14: £0.5bn)

Over 70% of Sportsbook revenue now comes through mobile, with the channel responsible for the majority of new UK customer activations and 80% of UK Sportsbook customers now transacting via mobile.

Gaming revenue increased by 34% to £88.5m (FY14: £66.2m)

Betfair US revenue increased by 29% to £58.8m (FY14: £45.7m)

Average headcount during the year of 1,901 was 9% higher than the prior year (FY14: 1,739)

Our share of operating profit in Betfair Australia was £0.1m (FY14: loss of £1.2m), relating to the period up until the disposal of the business.

Depends on if Breon can continue to cut costs on the exchange and boost margin and turnover on the sportsbook.
