Not sure what your point is, given that that was several years ago, and said defender is now way past his best...

you keep claiming that Man Utd are not one of the richest clubs when they clearly are:

2011/12 transfers:
Phil Jones £17m
David De Gea £18.9m
Ashley Young £17m

Did I? Where? I'm sure all I contested was the claim that they are the wealthiest...

Whilst Chelsea and City can buy pretty much whoever they want, United have to increasingly rely on Fergie's ability to spot a player with talent that hasn't yet been fully realized, like he did with Ronaldo, Chicarito and many others...

Manchester United are way down the table when it comes to spending: http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league- ... -2011.html

...but up there with the best when it comes to results! ;)

All I'm saying is that the players won't feel the pressure in the same way that (say) Wigan's players would if they were on the cusp of winning the Premiership, facing must win games. I'd hope Man U's players will take the attitude of 'we've done it before, so we can do it again', rather than losing sleep about whether they can make history...

Not really - that's the going rate for a world class player. How many other players could end up the joint highest scorer in the Premiership despite hardly leaving the bench, as Berbatov did last season?

BTW, did you look at the table I put a link to? And if you did, would you agree with me that Man U's achievements in recent years are pretty impressive when you consider that during the 2006-11 period, we were the 8th highest net spender? Of course, it has to be due to luck! ;)

By contrast, Man U have won loads of titles in recent years, so yet another Premiership title isn't such a big deal for them.

Isnt Jeff a Man Utd supporter? That is his statement early on.

I don't know how that page defines 'rich', but it's pretty meaningless considering that City or Chelsea can outspend us many times over without breaking sweat. Barcelona and Real Madrid quite possibly could too. Why do you think Man U have only one decent defender (Vidic)? :)

Jeff

Chelsea and Man City are losing investments. They do not care if they lost money, their owners invest only for their needs in order to show their power. Real Madrid and Barcelona , invest heavily in players, but with the amount of fans in the world they can collect a lot of money for sales of shirts and other advertising. Man utd, is a real business and if they do not buy better players , it's a question you should ask to their leaders but, there is not lacking of money for sure to make more expensive transfers.

Stef

I refer you to this link: http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league- ... -2011.html

Between 2006 and 2011, City spent £419 million net on players, Chelsea spent £156 million, and United spent £52 million (behind Stoke City, Sunderland and Aston Villa, amongst others).

The difference between United and City/Chelsea is that United is a business, not a billionaire's plaything, so it can't afford to go spending hundreds of millions of pounds on new players. That's why I say that the notion of Man U as the world's richest club is a bit misleading!
