Ajax were leading AZ 1-0 after 37mins, when a fan invaded the pitch and started to threaten the AZ keeper Esteban Alvarado. Alvarado was having none of it and kicked the fan to the ground, and kicked him again whilst on the ground.
The ref sent the goalkeeper off, AZ's furious coach then told his players to leave the pitch, and they refused to come back

It has happened before and the referees rule book says that any voilent conduct towards anybody should result in a sending off. So the ref was right.

Surely, every player has a right to feel safe on the pitch? It only takes one idiot to come onto the pitch with a dangerous weapon doesn't it?

Also, it sets a dangerous precedent. Let's just say AZ were leading 1-0 with 10mins to go. An Ajax fan would know any AZ player will be dismissed if threatened, so he decides to invade the pitch and attack their goalkeeper. The result is he gets arrested, but AZ are left with 10 men and a substitute goalie for the final 10mins, improving Ajax's chances of turning the match around

It's a bit like the floodlight scam, either the rules of the game need to change or the bookies response to the issue. I guess the result last night would be voided so at least there are no financial issues. But it is an odd situation for sure.

I guess clubs need better marshalls; rather than betty, 60, who has been a fan for 50 years and is a good source of cheap labour but ineffective at crowd control!

The football associations (home federation, Uefa and FIFA) does not guarantee justice to innocence, but tend to penalizes the guilty. The reasons why AZ left the field are most likely not taken into count when the decision will be held within the ducth football federation . The federation will pay attention only to the responsibilitys for not having respected the rules. Ajax will receive a fine for fan invasion in the field, AZ will probably disqualify, will recieve a fine and suspension of the goalkeeper at least for 6-7 games..

Usually it works this way but nothing is 100% certain.
