....how do you get them to show up. mine just look like this no matter what I do:

This is caused by the 3d objects colour being the same as the background on certain set ups of windows. To resolve this: -

Right click on your desktop and select properties.
Choose appearance tab.
Select advanced.
Choose 3d objects.
Modfiy the colour to a more suitable scheme.
