I thought we all might be interested to know (anonymously) a bit more about each of us (theories about PC payers on the forum etc).

So I have created a survey - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DNH258V

If we get to 10 or more responses I will turn on the display results function (and also post the results to the forum). I can see answers before hand but obviously (well maybe it is not but just in case) I'm not collecting other information or asking for account details etc, not trying to back solve anything or put names to responses etc.

This is not in any way endorsed or affilliated by Bet Angel or any other organisation. The results will not be commercialised and this is a private survey for general information and amusement.

And if we don't get to 10 responses then I'll just delete it all I guess.

Done, should be interesting if enough people participate. I had some hesitation about what constitutes 'recent' or 'early' etc but tried to be 100% straight or no point in doing it. It's tough wording things to cover such a wide variety of users.

I suspect most who are going to participate have done so - 37 responses in all.

What can we glean?

Well (and some of these things were probably obvious in advance - but here goes)

• many survey participants are long term betfair participants (23 over 8+ years);
• many are also long term successful participants (with 10 at PC1 and 9 at PC2);
• horse racing is the most popular with the participants 31 of 37
• football at 14 and greyhounds at 11 were the only others to get into double figures with participants.

My sum up, there are long term sucessful people here on these forums who make money from horse racing, football and greyhounds.

Is paying pc(1} a sign of success or just a sign your commission is <20%? Manual traders are going to struggle to avoid PC1 but the high scale autos (as opposed to selective auto) would have a much better change of avoiding it. I already pay about 25% of my gross in commission so wouldn't show up on a list of people in profit who pay PC1. I think there were 5 on the survey in that category.

The high number automating (21/37) was a surprise to me too. Maybe that tell us more about the type of people who like surveys (and the spin-off stats) than it does about the membership.

Is that 25% overall or just that week? I had an absoulute shocker throwing money away left right and center last week and still ended on 28% for the week. At 2% comms rate it's pretty hard to generate thousands in commission to offset PC. Maybe I need to go on one of these arbing courses where everyone ensures their losses stay on the exchange but winners always end up comng from the bookies. Whenever I tried arbing I only got the overall spread in prices to eventually stay at the bookies and even then they'd close me down.

Paying PC is only a sign of success in the eyes of people not paying it or not understanding how it's calculated. I was paying PC when I was making about £50 a week, which is a mark of success only so far as putting you amongst the winners. Paying PC2 on the other hand really is a sign of success because of the amount you need to win before you get there.

Betfair's over 20 years old, that's only £12.5K average profit a year for anyone supporting them from the early days. Take off the 40% and you been getting around £8K a year to maintain your privileged postion, probably get more on the dole with a lot less hours work.

In terms of betting or trading, success is a measure of your gross profit. If Betfair charged you 90% (like North Sea Oil was taxed in the 70s), it doesn't make you any less successful. It just means Betfair's enjoying your success instead of you.
