He's been ill (flu/pneumonia) but will be better off for losing the weight.
He looked a lot worse than he is though because he's still wearing the same cloths he had when he was a porker.

Yeah he did look a bit like a tortoise in a badly fitting shell.
The guy's 78 and he's not looked after himself, it's going to happen. Stick Steven Tyler in the same outfit and he'd look the same probably (but that's an opinion MrsW didn't agree with).
