I remember well being slightly *annoyed* when Talk Talk transitioned away from their pop syth sound to the experimental textures of Spirit of Eden, Laughing Stock. EMI loved their experimental approach so much that they duly dropped them from the label.

funny now that on reflection we can see how much influence this latter phase had on so many recent (experimental) artists (Radiohead, Doves, The 1975 etc...). it took me a good 10 years to embrace the *new* sound and is a real melancholy feeling listening today to New Grass (surely the closest that a non believer will get to the meaning of life).
