The physical toll of all this....

Trading is often about how to take the appropriate risk without exposing yourself to very human flaws.

Or you can op for something to go with your current desk, which i think i will be going for myself.

Great thread btw :)
apart from looking quite ugly, that varidesk is a brilliant solution to a common problem of wanting to stand to do some work but not being able to, due to the fixed desk scenario... love this and will see if they have something less industrial looking myself....

when you look around on Youtube there are some pretty awesome gaming setups people have.

Could you do me a favour and ask your son if he knows where you can source these gaming desks in the UK that are motorised.

I have been in the market for a motorised desk now for a while and I am really struggling to find one that will do what I want that is supplied in the UK. In the US there are loads of suppliers of them but as yet I have been unable to find one that will supply to the UK.

In the UK we seem to have only the poor mans options really which mainly consist of the sort that you place on top of your existing desk such as this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sit-stand-Work ... 015E70EV8/

Ergotron do a range of desks but their only motorised version of a standing desk, the Elevate, doesn't seem available anywhere in the UK. The best they offer to us in the UK is the WorkFit-D or B. Personally I would get the B so I could fit my own desktop to the frame. But this version isn't motorised and I would soon find it annoying trying to get it to the exact height I would want. Hence why I want a motorised one that you can pre-program with defined heights so that you get the correct height everytime.

Apex in the US do a good such desk at a reasonable price:

This is also a very good review of the UpDesk:

The only real option I have found so far in terms of motorised desk is from our good friends in Sweden, Ikea. They offer us this range of standing desks at their usual reasonable price points with also the option of a hand cranked desk for under £200. The only thing stopping me going for their desk is that you can't save set heights:

Review (Wait until 2mins 20secs for the surprise under his desk  ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSsKpWAIJGQ

Finally as a pet hate of mine is cables going everywhere can I highly recommend people buy themselves some of these for a few quid and a roll of velcro so you can cut straps to use instead of cable ties allowing easy swapping out of cables in the future:

Cable tie mounts (you can get stick on instead of screw): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007JVWF38/

I have been working from home for about 10 years now and a desk is crucial... I also tend to not work the summer as well which helps :D

Standing is a great way to work and also keeps you awake and more alert but dont lock your knees :D

In terms of physical toll of trading - should we also consider the physical toll caused by the more mental side of things?

i.e. the natural stress responses in our bodies each day? At my worst (in the past) I've felt so stressed about trading that by evening I've been completely wiped out, but not from any physical exertion. That wasn't right (I know that) due to poor trading approaches, and I've dealt with a lot of that since to improve. However, there's still some elements of stress for all trading days?

i play mostly IR and can say that there can be days when the best strategy that you posses seems to just keep going against you. at those times, you have to make the choice to pull the plug on the day or to carry on in the knowledge (historical) that things usually even out at some point. however, it's having the conviction to keep throwing your stake in the pool that carries the stress. tho of course, there's nothing nicer than when you see the down blip reverse and bless an all square position :D

Maybe we should start a thread to aid everybody. I've often considered starting a fat traders thread to encourage us to lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle.

And here's me thinking the fat finger was an automation rule.

There's been a lot of good advice from people....but my comment is simply "Welcome to the world of an office job".

And with regard to motorised desks etc, it's funny how a bunch of adolecent boys can't sit and play their little games without them, when penty of us grown-ups managed well enough to sit at a desk 8 hours a day for longer than they've been alive. Still, a fool and his pocket money...

Sadly, sitting all day hurts your back, shifting bags of cement all day hurts your back, one sudden sneeze hurts your back. Basically backs aren't fit for purpose and your only defence is to try and keep it strong.

If you quite like a walk, get a dog. They make you get out and get some fresh air and exercise....but make sure they allow them in the pub.

I think the problem is that trading is a very specific type of 'office job', or at least it can become so....hours and hours of intense staring at numbers. Yes, we can get up and move, but the temptation is to simply not do that....
I think most general office workers would not be so obsessively tied to their desks/screen in comparison, they have less reason to be like a trader glued to that screen.

That's very true but I used to find programming to be the same, i'm not sure I even blinked when I was in the zone.

As for trading, if I don't take 15mins off every 2hrs my results and focus suffer. That mad staring just makes me think there's patterns and opportunities where there's none. Everyone's got their style, but I try and trade 10 markets well, rather than trade 20 poorly and stressed. I'm too old and smoke too much to deal with stress as well :|

Now I don't want to become a figure of hate (excuse the pun) but I have the opposite problem, I'm not eating enough. 9.5st and falling... I can't find time to eat properly and I live on energy giving sugary coffee and hunger supressing special roll-ups.... a sort of cross between The Fly, Dot Cotton and Keith Richard. It's not good.

I think a health thread would be good but breath in a bit big boys, find room for a little one :D
