I am looking to purchase a new laptop & I want something that can easily cope with BetAngel & the many other programs I run on my computer.

I am looking to get an i7 Quad core processor & 8GB RAM.

Just wondered if there are any other spec's I should be looking for when looking to optimise BetAngel.

Many thanks.

Steve.

Steve

You don't need an i7 CPU unless you will use the laptop for other serious IT work; it is simply too much processing power.

I run a few laptops from an old P2 Pentium 650mhz with 1Gb of RAM up to an i5 with 8Gb of RAM and the Samsung Pro 840SSD. In between I have a Centrino Dual Core, an i3, a Pentium and they all run Bet Angel perfectly. Yes, the old P2 is slow but it runs Bet Angel well enough to trade with. I even used a little N10 Netbook with an Atom processor and that also performed well.

I went for an i5 because there was an offer which meant the price was cheaper than the equivalent i3! Crazy I know but I wasn't going to argue. I like the i5 because it has the HD4000 graphics chip built in and I have easily run my HD laptop screen and a 22" monitor running at full resolution with charts and market overview running without a glitch.

I fitted the Samsung Pro 840SSD and that made a huge difference. The programs load in the blink of an eye and Windows start-up is about 6 seconds   It also means there is no whirring and clicking from the normal HDD, it runs cooler and the battery life is extended.

Some laptops are equipped with specialist GPUs but as I said, I run the HD4000 built in GPU and it is fine.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for your response Jolly.

I am a web/app developer by trade, so I need something that can support all my programs. It's possible, I might have all the following running:

Outlook
Skype
Adobe Fireworks (Graphic design package)
Adobe Dreamweaver
BetAngel
Wampserver
MySQL Workbench
Spotify

I am currently thinking of purchasing this laptop:

The hardrive is a "750GB Hybrid SSD", but I was thinking of upgrading to a "Intel 520 Series "Cherryville" 180GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD" for another £96.

I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts?

I also use a laptop & 22" monitor combination. Typically I run the ladder from the laptop & charts from the monitor.

It looks a good machine but the comment about it being "all plastic" and the poor viewing angle of the screen has to be a concern.

I would say if you're trading you want to have nothing else open and give 100% to the task in hand.

Couldn't agree more, but whatever task I am doing, I like to have BetAngel running in the background because I am often recording data in excel, even if I can't participate in the market.

Thanks for your help.

Similar circumstances here, lots of power hungry programs all running at the same time, plus BA excel. My Dell laptop, a Precision M6500 i7 copes well but in full flow the proximity and noise from the cooling fan started to do my head in. I can tell when Betfair crashes - when the fan slows down!!! The laptop is a must for business away from home and due to installed software must be used as my main machine. Another issue was that my eyes were starting to weaken by working on a 1920x1200 17inch screen all day plus a poor external monitor.

My solution and answer to your initial post (any other specs) was to get a docking station capable of driving two 27 inch monitors 2560 x 1440 each. Apart from a wireless keyboard and mouse there is nothing else on my desk, and the laptop lid is left closed under a settee. Heavenly silence.

So ability to fit a good docking station to the chosen laptop IMHO would be a must.
