What role do the bookmakers play in the movement of prices in horse races?

Often you see a favourite drift wildly, only to go on and win. Could this be the bookmakers raising the price of a very good horse in order to put the public off betting for it?

Thanks

Hi Ferru,

This type of thing used to go on more often but with Betfair the off course market won't let this happen.

It is more likely to be the other way around anyway, bookies falsely shortening a horse to simulate a false gamble.

Hi Ben

The other advantage of that approach is presumably that the bookies can back a favourite and cause both its Betfair price and SP to fall, ensuring themselves a nice profit whatever happens!

It's worth watching weak betting markets. Where you have weak betting markets a sudden move for a horse can really gather some steam. This is probably due to people feeling the markets knows something they don't and as a consequence they start following it.
