Different Horse Races

Can anyone tell me more about the different horse race types? I know for example Hcaps are popular and involve adding weights to horses based on their rating. I don't however know some of the others are. For example: Listed, Chs, Stks, Mdn, Hrd, etc. I find that some strategies dont work in some of these categories so I'd like to have a deeper understanding. I came across a posting some time ago about the differences between these but can't seem to find it. Can anyone enlighten me? ))

Hrd - smaller fences (hurdles)
Chs - proper fences (chase)
NHF - run on flat

Thanks a lot Dallas, that's a huge help. Would you be able to elaborate how you trade different race types differently? if you do at all? What are some of the characteristics of each?
