I have recently won, completely by fluke on a 1000/1 winner. 0.42p at odds of a 1000 during automation. I needless to say was rather surprised when I came back and checked my betfair balance.
Does anyone have any idea how often this happens, where horses must be lagging behind and then go on to win?

I thought about this the other day, I was wondering if some of these 1000/1 winners in play are the result of a protest, horse wins the race by half a length (backed into 1.01) only to have it snatched away in the protest room. I am not sure of the rules regarding a protest but I would have thought those that were laying the 2nd runner would have to payout if the protest was upheld. Which could mean a few pounds could have been layed at 1000/1

Not very often

Almost exactly as often as the price suggests. But with the min/max prices being 999/1 or 1/99, then there's more potential value at one end then the other depending on what you're doing. A few years ago there was talk of extending the ladder to cover actually liklihood (perhaps going up to 10,000 or 1.001) but that was shelved because so few would be interested at those liabilities.

Haha would be a nifty little achievement on any market tbf, don't think I ever had a straight 1000 winner or 1.01 lay winning bet, not counting tennis freebies which were diluted by trading

The recent 1.01 winner would end up being the City one To Quality for CL final but ended up hedging altho it was never intended to be a trade or anything as my software was already closed, only wanted a free little bet in case City somehow found a way to cock it up again

For sure some value in them odds I think, for those that like chasing them, even the City one being 1.01/1.02 at 73mins seemed stupid value cuz all it takes is 1 goal to make something happen

There are plenty of 999/1 winners from in-running horse racing. I've picked up a couple in my time, but only for a few pence.

Most selections (aside from the winner and perhaps one or two more) will hit 1000 at some point in every race. So average 6 per race X average 200 races per day on Betfair across UK, Aus and US and that's 1200 'opportunities' per day so they will hit sometimes.

Yeah, especially on social media these types of longshots seem to happen far more often than the odds would suggest
