convoysur, - show this to the BHA, - imagine a horse race actually going off on time!!!!

Those stalls should be fitted to every racecourse. Just slide the geegees on to the track sideways. Pure genius, or guinness - whatever.

Also means my beef curry takeaway probably was beef.

Wednesday night's Newnight (15 Feb BBC2) - Interesting piece on hi-speed trading and a way to break the dominance of fastest first. Warning : Includes lots of xxx server porn.

I've always thought these hi-speed operations were robbing money from our pension funds. For quite some time I've wondered about leveling the playing field by making exchanges catch packets of trades in 200ms bundles and randomly submitting them to the market...this idea on Newsnight isn't a million miles from that, but not as good as mine :) .

shaun - saw this item as well and thought that the company (iex the investors exchange) have a really neat way of tackling the issue. I love the irony that by slowing the customer down by 0.350ms, the customers all get a better deal. i actually then wondered where i could get access to $1m to hook up my own close proximity node inside that building and just switch on, intercept and party hard!!

btw - for those wanting to skip straight to this segment, it's at about 25:00 into the programme http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... t-15022017

I thought $1m for that access to 30+ exchanges was pretty good value given what they can make. I'll have a feel down the back of the sofa.

glad you agree, i thought "why aren't more people with that kinda money not doing this". I'm estimating that even if they only make $1 per $1k transaction, they will still be clearing $1 a second if the averages that I've picked up are correct. extrapolate that out to even an 8 hour day:

8 * 60 * 60 * 1 = $28,800 a day!! on a notional skim of 0.1% per txn (> $8m per annum).

Shaun, dig deep behind the sofa and maybe even get the keys to the lada out as well and check under the footwell :D

well, yet again newsnight came up trumps for stateside news. if you haven't watched it tonite, you need to watch this segment where evan davis tries to sensibly talk with one of trumps advisors:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-39000118

not sure whether i find this as funnily scary as the actual trump press conference itself (well worth a watch)

It's sort of similar to Betfair imposing an in-play delay. Which does help. But still doesn't completely negate the advantage of being the fastest. They'll always have an advantage if they can see and react quicker even if there's a universal delay, because they're still the fastest after that delay. Definitely does limit their potential profit though.

As with most things that may look bad at first, it's possible to profit from hft yourself...(aside from the obvious: easier execution, better liquidity)
