I love the challenge of developing baf files. The unknown and thought of a possible winning bot draws me to the flame :) Unfortunately I have not had consistent success on horses or dogs(tennis is reasonable so far) and get burnt fingers now an again (never code and beer) :D Anyway, thought someone might like to get some ideas (or at least a few chuckles)from this one-you will note that I pilfered a few ideas from Dallas-thanks Dallas .Anyway-hope this helps someone to point to profit.
PS: Mentioned this before but being able to record the price you matched at so you can track + or - ticks from where you got a match seems to make sense to me as a future update to Bet Angel. happy botting.... :geek:
PPS:Any suggestions or pointers welcome.Tunnel vision-it's a thing
Might post a few more if there is interest....

Hi,

(Disclaimer - Baf files are a major leak in my life // they are a sheer waste of my time, and do not provide any ROI) - but similarly to u, like the puzzles, when I have the time, which alas, isnt often).

Having looked at the baf file, it seems a random attempt to back selection and try scalp from there. I would try and add some pre-conditions, like consider if the selection was say, drifting or shortening, over the last 4 mins, and had passed thru any key resistance or support levels.

I would also consider, that much heavy artilery has been loaded, against the fav in each race (bot wise), so, maybe, pick, maybe, the 5th or 6th in the betting, which, might get less liquidity, but, is easier to profit from.

As a general note : I am always thinking of defense.

If u back a selection, and, another gets withdrawn, the price u lay back at, will be much less, in a reformed market, and will cause your scalp, to give a loss. How do u protect, when the mkt is suspended, and the number of runners is changed ?

Thanks for that reply. I guess it is a bot that looks for a steamer+bounce(I saw how it made about $15 on one race which moved in a favourable pattern)-but attempts to limit risk/loss.I hadn't taken reduction factors into account...interesting thought. This stuff breaks my little brain.I'll share more.It prompts thought. Thanks again :ugeek:

Agree with the leaking.Similar sentiment here. This one loses like a lone wildebeest on a savannah full of starving lion  :o but here it is as an exercise anyway

PPPS: Every time I hear PW say..did you see that big order come through there? ..or there is a lot of backing activity..I hear Volume % change on a runner. It might be my small brain but how is it volume % change on a runner is not trackable in BA yet? Have I missed something?

If that last trade via bot don't sum it up..rinse and repeat..sheesh..moved from 2.90 to 4.2 in a a nanosecond (less than 3 secs) and never came back. :?: :?: :?:  :?

Ok, one more :)

So, the day after my last post I got caught by ye olde suspend greyhound market 30 secs before the off..what the hell is that!!!???..just after the bot had placed an opening bet for $10.Fortunately I was watching and saw it happen. The initial bet being a lay bet and the pooch won..of course   :?-lose $9.4 .I re-sync'd my clock but from reading forum posts here this happens from time to time-but sucks big time.Reliability much!
Today, after settling my mind a bit..I re-ran the bot...mostly on horse markets :) but some dogs. All good..made $1 over 5 or 6 races on $10 trades..nice. I walked away for a bit and returned to see a whatif of -$98 or a win of $128    :o .I checked the log and the bot had placed 6 back bets and 2 lay bets for half the amount of the back bets 8-) Especially interesting since one of my baf file conditions is that matched bet amounts should be 0 before acting to avoid this very situation .The dog won but since I was heavily on the back side..winner winner chicken dinner..lucky..on dogs! go figure! I put it down to Australian network latency but not detecting 4 or 5 matches ..must have been one hell of a latency issue.I was only gone for 5 mins too.
I also have a tennis bot running but since appearing profitable it stopped trading soon after ,of course. :P  ..monitoring that one
What a weekend. The tech challenge of writing a profitable bot that works on dogs, horses + Aus & UK and another on tennis is very satisfying to say the least. To be caught by issues beyond control is heartbreaking...life huh,
I think I am going manual..and I SUCK at manual trading...though PW's last video on the in play trader did help a bit..thanks Peter

Thought I would update this thread-partly to help me keep track of my thoughts and for those out there(like I was) starting out and thinking it-automation- is simply impossible for the mere mortals on the ground. ;) I know I've wondered over the years. Hopefully I am not being premature but I can feel patience in my analysis and bot writing now that was never there before.
Anyway, 126 markets, $50 odd profit on tennis and horses-all automated over 7 days. It is not long term profit yet, I know, and there is much work to be done but I can see the upside and downside boundaries (after running bots over then's of thousands of markets) and feel good about possibilities (touch wood :) )..especially as the bots are massively scalable in the context of when I have them running.
Even to get this far, running automation unattended and not getting caned, with some upside , tickles me pink :D All the best to you lot starting out & or searching for the holy grail like me. I am no maths geek and not a coder (luckily we have BA and this forum to guide us) but I find this whole thing, a very satisfying journey, win or lose & I hope my thoughts & journey help you. Good luck.

Keep the posts up mcgoo, I enjoyed following your progress ) And gratz on recent success...

I've been on a similar journey and experienced the same issues but like you haven enjoyed the experience. I think its a great way to better understand markets and the highs from a success are worth the pain...

Best so far was a 30 day winning streak from a bot on the dogs a few months ago but then something changed and its no longer profitable (I think!). Like you I got caught out by the early suspension of a market which reformed 10 secs before the off - now have an additional safety rule to check time since last suspension and takes advantage of the fact that most races start late....

Onwards & upwards......

Stick at it, there's gold in them there hills :)

Don't get too hung up on strike rates though as you'd have to be very lucky to have a high winning % automated and high winning %'s sometimes just limit your profit as the conditions are too tight. For me botting is generally about the volume you can stick thru the markets and any variance will eventually even out. Small amounts will soon add up nicely if you churn enough markets so any wins should be welcomed no matter how small if they're repeatable.
