I just checked my net clock log on the VPS which re-syncs every 15mins
During that time on average it drops out around 20ms-30ms with a few entries as high as several hundred ms

That's because world clock only gets you to within about 50ms (due to the variation in your ping so could be more) so that's less stable as a relative measure through the day than your server clock doing 1 resync a day and letting it run. I was always told you shouldn't resync more than once an hour but even that's a bit ott really.

w32tm.exe does the job without installing any freeware.

Thank you both, I think I will switch to this method and just sync once a day as the article suggests at 01:15am each day.

Thats a good idea, I will go with 11am so it covers the early winter starts.
