Racing out to ban drones over fears they 'give punters unfair edge'

I've always been surprised it's not been more widely used given how tech-savvy in-play traders generally are on course

Surely just a matter of time until we have an issue in a race with one again. I think from memory it was the July Cup at Newmarket when Frankie's American horse bolted down to the start and had to be withdrawn when it heard one that was being used for the TV pictures that had gotten too close.

You see them in use now, from memory, at Kelso and maybe a few other tracks fairly regularly.

The simplest solution to stop their use by inrunning punters would be to level the field with faster TV pictures but that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Partly, cos my frequency is still very low compared to most

Finding the markets very dull so far this week. How are others going?

Churning small profits on every race but nothing exciting. Got a feeling Kempton might be better.

Forecast not looking too good for the next two weeks. Suspect a lot of meetings will be lost to the frost.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Derek. It is very quiet in this part of the forum of late so I am guessing a lot of the 'regulars' are taking some time off in this quiet period.

I know I plan to now that we are down to just 2 afternoon meetings on Monday's and Tuesday's. As you said in your later comment, it wouldn't be surprising to also lose some other meetings with the cold snap on its way. It has been a good year so far in terms of cancellations, I can't remember any due to the cold weather.

In fact, many – probably most – small to medium-sized tracks will now make some dedicated provision for in-running punters, and the annual value of the market in live pictures is significant. So it is little wonder that they see drones feeding live pictures to Betfair backers as amounting to “theft”, in the words of a spokesman for Arena Racing Company (ARC) quoted in the Mail piece.
Awww, don't you just feel pity for them, guys    ? Think, I can almost hear quiet barrel organ sounds with a little monkey on top of it when read this.
