BBC4 documentary about this was good:
6 petabyes of data, collected from 8 places over 5 nights on helium filled HDDs.
All 8 stations needed simultaneous good weather.
8 x £250,000 maser clocks.
Time delay/distances had to accomodate :
Ice movement in Antartica and volcanic action in Hawaii.
0.5m daily altitude change cause by the moon distorting the earth.
Earth's rotation and transit through space.
£30m
