I'm Scottish myself, so I'm following the referendum with interest - I'm not living in the UK now though, so not eligible to vote.

What's the situation 'on the ground' in Edinburgh right now?

NO had a big lead for long time, but then the race really closed up, and it looked for a moment as if YES was roaring home for the win like a top-class hold-up performer in racing ;) Then it seemed that NO was holding on to a small lead, but just now YES seems to have the momentum again, with the very latest poll-of-polls on the BBC showing NO only just hanging on.

ipredict prediction market in New Zealand gives a 29% chance of the YES vote winning - somewhat higher odds that suggested on Betfair.

I was in Edinburgh city centre the other day. I didn't see a single campaigner for either side.

I think the Scottish people would respect 'Dave' more if he got on a soapbox on Princes St and argued his case with ordinary people, rather than making choreographed speeches at corporate events where he's not going to be heckled.

Some info here on taking his "in play".

Outer hebrides etc. can have difficulty getting ballot boxes to counts so guess it could go well into Friday if its close.

Anyone know when this market closes and how how the result will be announced.

Rules mention an official announcement but guess there is no precedent.

Betfair's sportsbook have paid out on No votes already.

They are either being very smart or very stupid...

Scottish independence: Alternative Guide to Scotland referendum night

1/20 - Salmond says that any opposing view is oppressive south of the border scaremongering.

1/10 - SNP claims that scotland is the worlds wealthiest economy and would get even wealthier if only they were independent. (According to their own calculations)

4/9 - Nicola Sturgeon promises free unicorns to all girls aged under 5 if they pester their parents to vote YES. To be funded with a scaremongering tax on exports to England.

Evens - Rearmament programme to be announced on September 19th if Scottish vote YES. To banish English problem for once and all. Funded by sale of Faslane to unknown middle eastern group.

:D

in your opinion what are your co-workers main motivations for voting Yes? is it an anti-English thing, economics or what?

i wouldn't trust Salmond to run a bath, 'just interested to know why 50% of Scots would trust him to run the country.

Do you think it's possible that there are lots of no voters there who dare not speak up?

For some reason, there appears to be a lot more aggression on the Yes side of the debate than the No side (watch what happens on Twitter when anyone says something critical of independence!).

ITV reporter Tom Bradby observed today that:

'All reporters I chatted to yesterday agreed that the level of abuse and even intimidation being meted out by some in the ‘Yes’ campaign was making this referendum a rather unpleasant experience.

And whilst I am sure both sides have been guilty, the truth - uncomfortable as it is to say it – is that most of the heckling and abuse does seem to be coming from the Nationalists.'

Nationalism tends to appeal to the disaffected working class more than the comfortable middle class (who never want much political change cos they're doing just fine, tvm).

'not seen any analysis, but I reckon there's probably a big split on class lines.
