number of horse racing traders out there

Having read Peters interesting blog entry about how there were more than 500 traders on one race back in 2003, I was wondering how many traders there may be out there who regularly trade nowadays. Of those 500 I would imagine most of them wont have been pros at the time, but since the markets have grown so much, there must be a hell of a lot of traders out there nowadays. Anyone have any thoughts / info on this?

I wouldn't be surprised if the number of traders out there is the same but that some of them earn a lot more than others. I guess quite a few have fallen by the way side over time and been replaced with better traders? That's my thoughts.
