The growth and growth of inplay

The growth and growth of inplay

It seems difficult to imagine a time when it wasn’t ‘all about the in-play’ – but before Ray and Betfair there really wasn’t much concept of betting on an event after the official start time. How things have changed!

The start

Back when exchanges started, it was purely a replication of the traditional bookmaker regime. Similar sports and similar punting styles, but exchanges brought this new concept of betting while an even was underway.

In essence, some markets were ‘in-play’ …

Salisbury

Salisbury

Whenever I see Salisbury on the card it reminds me of a document that Betfair published many moons ago.

I saw Salisbury on the card today and the same bell rang in my head, but also a bit of alarm at the two and three runner races on the card! How poor is that? But back to the main topic.

Back in 2004 Betfair issued a document that actually clearly laid out what a market looked like. In the document

Santa delivers early xmas present

Santa delivers early xmas present

No I haven’t finally got a Christmas card from Betfair, just a catch up on events at Santa Anita a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve had an on off relationship with the breeders cup over the years but this year turned out to be quite good in the scheme of things. It was marked by good and bad races but the good ones produced something and the bad ones didn’t really lose much. So I’d rank 2013 as one of …

Goodwood so far

Goodwood so far

I think it has played out similar to what I imagined. People always over-hype Goodwood and as a consequence the markets often fill up with money that nobody takes.

If you look at the detail you can see this showing up in the stats. The average queue size at Goodwood is twice its normal size, but the fill rate is about normal. This adds up to taking a little more than twice as normal to fill. The longer something takes …

The rise and rise of Cricket trading

The rise and rise of Cricket trading

So it’s the Ashes and English expectations are high and liquidity is expected to be so as well. There have been some blockbusting markets on the Ashes in the past so I’m quite interested in keeping an eye on it this time around.

I have to admit though that I’m not a big cricket trader, yet. There are only 24 hours in a day and therefore I have to pick where to put my focus and all my time is …

The numbers behind Royal Ascot

The numbers behind Royal Ascot

And so here we are, another year, another Ascot. For me, another declined invitation to attend. While that pains me, in another couple of years it won’t be a problem. But for the moment, I’d still rather be on this side of the desk during one of the busiest weeks of the year.

Wall to wall, quality racing, from now till Saturday, I’m in trading heaven! Let’s see how it all adds up.

Last year Royal Ascot had matched bet …

Betfair implement new turnover charge

Betfair implement new turnover charge

News from Australia this morning that Betfair are to implement a turnover charge on customers, full details: –

https://betfair.com.au/turnovercharge/

In case you were not aware, a high court ruling this year in Australia has switched the law from a gross profits tax to a turnover based revenue fee for racing. This doesn’t affect the well established and politically well oiledl, but slightly ancient and backward thinking, incumbents in Australia; but does have a significant impact on the new entrants like …

Football rich list

Football rich list

It is always interesting to read the Deloitte reports. They seem to highlight the significant, and growing, gap between footballs elite clubs and the rest.

Seven of the top ten clubs come from the English premiership. The top clubs even in this elite division are pulling away from the others.

But there are still a large number of structural issues in the game.

Cheltenham – Post-mortem

Cheltenham – Post-mortem

OK, it’s been a little while since Cheltenham finished, but I’ve been very busy on other projects and I have also been having a bit of a break before the start of the flat season proper.

Lets start from a top level. Measuring the activity to post time in the markets, a total of 26 races generated matched bet turnover on Betfair of £84.3m this year. In 2009 it generated £83m, so overall the matched bet turnover was up about …
