Commentator Cliches
Thought it would be fun to have a thread of commentator cliches across all sports. Football for some reason seems particualr egregious I find. What prompted the thought was just hearing one that i haven't heard for a couple of years - the player having a 'cultured left foot'!

Snooker is full of them,
'greatest player ever to pick a cue up', springs to mind .
Or 'plays shots no one else thinks of'
And when they have no cliche ready they resort to the hackneyed 'the young/Chinese/Welshman/Scot.
Particularly like it when commentators curse come in, 'superb safety player' - and then they go in-off or
'always plays the right shot' as they make a right mess of it and scatter the reds everywhere.

As an Irish Liverpool fan there's plenty I'm used to hearing but they wouldn't exactly be cliches;
"In the blink of an eye, Mo Salah scores again"
"Cheeky flick by Firminho"
"Glen Johnson caught out of position"
"Alexander Arnold caught out of position"
"Shane Long offside"
"Foul by McClean, he'd wanna be careful now, he's already on a yellow"
"James McCarthy down, signalling to the physio"
The name "Brian O'Driscoll" plus any or all of the words "Magic, wizard, brilliant, fantastic"
The name "Tom Brady" plus "clutch king" "come from behind expert" "future first vote Hall of Famer"
And more recently "McIlroy at the tee.....(ping)......oh he's not happy with that drive"

Don't know if you've ever seen this but it absolutely cracks me up every single time I come across it:sphilipmyer wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 5:58 pmSnooker is full of them,

Talking of simpler times, I was talking to someone the other day about a time when I was a kid going round to a mates house for tea. I'd been playing football and had the usual muddy knees and my mate's mum made me have a bath before I could play. It made me think how I cannot imagine for one second now asking one of my kid's friends to take a bath in my house, or if one of my kids came home and said they'd had a bath at someone's house - be absolute outrage!
