Spot the ‘greensider’ competition

Nipped up the road to Wentworth last Sunday for the BMW PGA Championships.

I reckon you have your next golf star laid out in front of you in the form of Matteo Manassero. Only 20, he is playing beyond his years already and I reckon he could have an impact in a major sooner rather than later. He has four tour wins now and he is already being backed in for both Open championships. One to watch.

I went to watch the Golf on Sunday; those of you that know my trading style will know that I don’t tend to trade the last couple of days of a tournament. But it seems plenty of others were. As I was standing in silence, waiting for a short put; I got a shove and into my ears came the dulcet tones of, ‘Yeah, it’s about five foot away, yeah, no, back, yeah’. It seems I had bumped into an amateur in-play hooverer. He was relaying information back to somebody to act on.

The problem you face with golf however is that odds don’t quite move the way you expect. In Tennis or a Football match a goal or point has a definite effect. But in a Golf tournament a player can sink a birdie or slice into the woods, but his odds may still not adjust if a nearby group has just sunk an eagle or something. So it’s often not as straight forward as you would think, especially in the latter stages of the final day. Chatting on a mobile phone near a green is strictly verboten, he could have been a bit more subtle! I was surprised he wasn’t approached by a steward. As it was, I just stalked him for four holes or so to listen to the conversation out of interest. I was going to approach him, but an errant shot in the group I was following meant I split off to the next group ahead to watch Manassero. I could post up the lovely shot of him staring right into the camera. But instead, lets have a little fun. I’ve added two images to this post, see if you can spot him. I didn’t even realise he was in both these until I sifted through my images later on.

You may be interested to know, I did trade actually from the course. But it was because I wanted to do a race at the Curragh, from which I picked up a neat £130; what a strange life I lead! As it was, it was a decent tournament and a beautiful day. It was a very enjoyable ‘walk in the park’. I was surprised how well organised it was and how comfortable it was from a spectator viewpoint. I think that merits a revisit next year.
