Goodway

So Goodwood is underway and it’s performing more or less as I expected and, hopefully, set your expectations at.

In the first two days the biggest race reached £2.2m but the lowest was waaaaaaaaaay off that. Mainly thanks to clashing with other races. Attention is very firmly focused on the feature races and that’s producing the majority of the matched bet turnover so far, helping all markets reach £16m so over the two days. But curiously it doesn’t feel like it’s that fluid.

Some of this is down to the price of the favourite. The shorter the price the more liquidity flows through the market. Yesterday we five races starting at less than 3’s. Kingman topping the list at 1.42 at post time. This market generated £1.7m in matched bets. So the shorter prices this years, so far, makes it difficult to directly compare like for like volumes.

2013 wasn’t a vintage year for me. This year my results have been a little erratic, but ahead of last year. Erratic because I am pulling out the odd decent result but often I’m chucking away good positions for little return. My trading style often does that as I’ll sacrifice a safe profit for a slightly riskier bigger one, as long as I can ensure I’m far enough away from a potential loss. That’s reflects my general trading style. Build from a base, unless you have nothing to build on. In which case you exit for a small loss.

One of the guys in the office whipped my total today, so I now have a target for tomorrow! I made the mistake of taking a phone call while trading. Even if I do have a wireless headset, it’s never a sensible thing to do. Being distracted, I missed a great opportunity; which is gutting. I shall be more disciplined tomorrow!

Galway is proving to be a fertile hunting ground for me and that’s fitting in nicely with Goodwood so I’m looking to use both those meetings as my main focus and will see if I can pick up some extra in between. The problem you will face on Thursday is Stratford may bump into Galway and Galway into Nottingham. But it’s a question of timing in the first part of the afternoon. Almost certain later. So that will be the challenge for Thursday.

Good luck!
